Therapeutic and Preventive Methods for Controlling Cryptosporidiosis in Ruminants

Résumé

La cryptosporidiose est une maladie parasitaire causée par un protozoaire intestinal du genre Cryptosporidium. Le traitement curatif, chez les animaux présentant déjà une diarrhée, s’appuie sur le lactate d’halofuginone ou le sulfate de paromomycine. L’approche préventive, qui doit être considérée comme prioritaire, associe un volet sanitaire orienté vers la maîtrise de l’hygiène et une bonne administration du colostrum, et un volet médical reposant sur l’usage du lactate d’halofuginone et/ou l’emploi d’un vaccin (immunisation passive des veaux) récemment mis sur le marché. La combinaison des deux approches préventives, sanitaire et médicale, est à privilégier.

Abstract

Cryptosporidiosis is a parasitic disease caused by the intestinal protozoa of the genus Cryptosporidium. Curative therapy in animals exhibiting clinical diarrhoea is based on halofuginone lactate or paromomycin sulfate. Preventive measures, which should be prioritised, encompass both a sanitary component — focused on strict hygiene management and adequate colostrum administration — and a medical component involving the use of halofuginone lactate and/or a recently introduced vaccine for passive immunisation of calves. An integrated approach combining both sanitary and medical preventive strategies is strongly recommended.
